The Liberation Monument was designed by our very own founding director Eric Snell. The Monument is designed so that one day a year on the 9th May when the Channel Islands were liberated from the German Occupation it’s shadow acts as a sundial pointing to the significant times as they happen. Providing a link between present day and 9th May 1945.

The Monument was erected to celebrate 50 years of freedom in 1995 and is made up of 50 layers of Guernsey Granite representing the 50 years of freedom. The top five layers are sheared off at a slant to represent the 5 years of occupation.

The bench alongside is inscribed with the important times:

7.15am The signing of the surrender of the German forces.

8.00am The landing of the liberating British force.

10.15am The unfurling of the Union flag

Alongside the times is the inscription of Winston Churchill’s memorable quote “Our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today.

Then at the end of the bench is the inscription “Thanks be to God” in English and Guernsey French

The monument represents a specific time and place and thanks to a marrying of art and science will continue to mark out these times one day a year for 100s of years to come.
